Reiki and Stress Management

reiki.jpgHow does stress physically change our bodies?

It is so common to say “I’m so stressed,” “work is so stressful,” or “the kids are stressing me out.”  Naturally, we think of stress as a negative thing.  However, Stress is any change in the environment that requires your body to react and adjust in response. The body reacts to these changes with physical, mental, and emotional responses.  Stress can be both positive and negative.  For example, getting married, excitement over planning a surprise party, internal worrying or debating, daily responsibilities, work deadlines, children, relationships.  Any of these experiences are causing your body to ignite some sort of response.

Stress within your comfort zone can help you perform under pressure, motivate you to do your best, even keep you safe when danger looms. But when stress becomes overwhelming, it can damage your health, mood, relationships, and quality of life.

We all handle stress in different ways.  Some of us release it by going to the gym, some of us like to talk with our friends, some of us prefer to harbor our stress.  With that said, most of us are not handling our stress in a positive manner.  Stress is truly disruptive to your overall being.  Protect yourself by understanding how manage your stress and avoid feelings of overload.  Take steps to reduce the stress in your life.

This is where Reiki comes into play.  Many of us have not heard of Reiki until recently and the some that have may not necessarily believe in the healing power of Reiki.

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It encourages the importance of self-care and the realization that the body needs to be cared for through energy.  The word Reiki comes from the Japanese word (Rei) which means “Universal Life” and (Ki) which means “Energy”. Rei is a subtle wisdom that permeates everything, both animate and inanimate. Because of its infinite nature, it is all knowing.  Ki is the non-physical energy that is within all living things.

Reiki is a spiritual, natural healing therapy used to promote balance throughout the human system. Reiki does not involve physical manipulation but works by balancing our body’s chakras and meridians through energy transfer.  During a reiki session, “palm healing” or hands-on healing uses a "universal energy" that is transferred through the palms of the practitioner to a patient in order to encourage healing.  Reiki is based on the idea that “life force energy” flows through us and we must keep that energy high.  When a person’s “ki” or energy is strong and free flowing, is when a person’s body and mind is in a positive state of health.  Reiki triggers the body’s natural healing abilities, and improves and maintains health.  A Reiki session can help ease tension and stress and can help support the body to facilitate an environment for healing on all levels – physical, mental, and emotional.  Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing.

The mind does not exist only in the brain but also through-out the body. The nervous system extends to every organ and tissue in the body and so the mind exists here also.  The mind even extends outside the body in a subtle energy field 2 to 3 feet thick called the aura. This means that our thoughts and energy collect in various locations throughout the body and in the aura. The places where negative thoughts and feelings collect is where Ki (energy) is restricted in its flow. Negative thoughts and feelings become lodged in the unconscious mind/body and inhibit the rest of our physical body from proper functioning.  Negativity manifests itself as physical illness in the body.  As Reiki flows through a sick or unhealthy area, it breaks up and washes away any negative thoughts or feelings lodged in the unconscious mind/body thus allowing a normal healthy flow of Ki to resume. As this happens, the unhealthy physical organs and tissues become properly nourished with Ki and begin functioning in a balanced healthy way thus replacing illness with health.

While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion.  You do not need to have a belief system to support this practice, but it is still important to live and act in a way that promotes harmony and balance in your life as well as others.  It is a subtle and effective form of energy work using spiritually guided life force energy.
